The fifth edition of the conference THE VOICE AND CHOICE OF PORTUGUESE WOMEN IN THE DIASPORA : IN FRANCE AND ELSEWHERE will take place in Paris, May, 2011. The first édition was held in 2003 in Toronto, Canada, and was the initiative of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, of the University of Toronto. The conference’s goal was to comemmorate the 50th anniversary of the official opening of Portuguese immigration to Canada, with a special focus on women’ issues: their role in the host communities, education, transmission of language and culture, their role in the arts etc.

After the Toronto conference, it was agreed that every two years there would be a call for papers in interdisciplinary areas and a group of scholars would host the conferecence in another country and university. In 2005 it was Berkeley, California, USA ; in 2007, University of Macao, in China and in 2009, the Federal University of Parana, Curitiba, Brazil. Three books have already been published as a  result of these conferences.

Scholars in many areas  such as literature, civilization, linguistics, sociology, history, ethnography, anthropology, musicology, psychology, health sciences, and arts are encouraged to send proposals.

The host country of the conférence is obviously the main focus of the research – France in 2011, but that will not exclude the worldwide dimension of the Portuguese women’s voice. With an immigrant population of about 800,000 Portuguese, 48,7% being women, this conference will give great emphasis to immigrant women’s studies and the Portuguese language in France. At the same time, there will be an opportunity to compare with other situations in the lusophone world.

The conference aims to contribute to the lusophone research in France and to promote Portuguese culture, literature and art. The Conference is part of ‘Pôle Tout Monde’,  in the theme «Migrations».
