Summary
Algeria has been working to improve the protection and promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities having ratified, in 2009, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Despite these efforts, the implementation of rights remains limited and the need to assess the progress made in the social inclusion of persons with disabilities persists.
This project fills this gap, aiming to develop and use a set of indicators to evaluate the social inclusion of people with disabilities in the Wilaya of Algiers, notably through:
- a quantitative inquiry on the social integration of persons with disabilities;
- a qualitative inquiry on the obstacles they face in their everyday lives;
- a study on the coordination of support services for persons with disabilities.
This participatory-action-research applies the principles and methodology developed in the context of Disability Rights Promotion International (DRPI), and is grounded on a human rights’ approach to disability that emphasizes the involvement and empowerment of people with disability and their organizations throughout the research process.
